The Zoom Room opens at 11:45 AM.  As noted above, we will begin our talk promptly at noon, forgoing the Pledge of Allegiance and opening remarks.
 
LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER: 
 
David Allen introduced Canadian Rotarian Naveen Yoosa, who briefed the club on ROOTA--- Rising Out Of The Ashes, an initiative her club has undertaken to help the 60,000 people who live in “Garbage City” outside of Cairo to be free from the ravages of poverty that has plagued them for generations. As Ms. Yoosa explained, the original group who began to collect and sift through the garbage were migrants from farmlands that were no longer productive, migrants who could not find work in Cairo and so found a niche where they could at least earn subsistence wages. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, I recommend that you click on this to see some of the scores of pictures of this city on Google. ROOTA is making an effort to provide far less arduous work and far more rewarding work, particularly for women and children.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
 
David Allen briefed the club on some of the decisions made at the Board meeting earlier in the week noting that: Kevin Wenger has agreed to revive the Pancake Breakfast; Dick Podolec reported that the Dartmouth Roterac Club raised $5,000 in food by cashing in their unused meal cards and are planning a hot chocolate fund raiser for Valentine’s day; Heidi Postupak reported that the Philanthropy Committee will be offering non-profits some of the expertise of Rotarians in addition to making financial donations; and Bruce Atwood’s Auction Committee has set a date of November 18 for this year’s event. 
 
David Allen also announced that starting with our first meeting in February, a Rotarian will be asked to give a 5-10-minute talk on who they are and what they do in an effort to get us to know each other better. Sarah Jackson will be the inaugural speaker this week. 
 
Jed Williamson appealed for judges to assist with the speech contest at Hanover High. 
 
Len Cadwallader offered a Happy Dollar in honor of Rubi Simon’s work with ACTS Honduras, noting that she will be updating the club at a future meeting 
 
COMING ATTRACTIONS:  
 
February 9 – Todd Allen introduces Brendan Nyhan, Dartmouth professor, will talk to us about the latest “Bright Line Watch” report. 
 
February 16 – Rubi Simon and Len Cadwallader give us an update on ACTS Honduras, our club’s international outreach. 
 
February 23 – Wayne Gersen introduces Erica Schneider, Hartford Vo-Tech Executive Director who will share some good news on the burgeoning enrollments at the school. 
 
March 2 – Wayne Gersen will introduce Jay Baddams, SAU 70 Superintendent, who will give us an update on the challenges the district has faced during the pandemic. 
 
NOTE: Thanks to your response to last week’s appeal, we are booked through the end of April…. But, as always, I appreciate getting speakers lined up well in advance. Please share any ideas you have!
