THIS WEEK:

Those who have heard Danny Blanchflower in prior years will most certainly circle their calendars this Wednesday, for his talks on the economy are always timely, provocative, and entertaining. Those of us of a certain age are always glad to hear Danny's theory on happiness, which is described in Wikipedia as follows:

He has posited a correlation between age and happiness, declining through the 20s, 30s, and 40s before increasing in retirement.[11] He has been labelled a "happiness guru" for his ability to quantify the increase in happiness for individuals who are married or have sex frequently, work which has applications in divorce law and pharmaceutical advertising.[12]

LAST WEEK:

We welcomed a new member into the club, Ruby Nash, who is new to our club but not new to Hanover, A Hanover High graduate who was sponsored by Peggy Cooper, Ruby's family has roots in the community. We look forward to learning more about her when she gives her talk in the weeks ahead.

There were several announcements made last week:

  • Carol Olwert announced a talk that on Jordanian refugee children will be given this week at DHMC (see attached).
  • President Csatari reminded club members we are looking for a new Head Elf to replace Julia Griffin and reminded members with ideas for the silent auction to forward them to Bob Ashton
  • Dick Podolec announced that our October 16 meeting would be a combined meeting with Lebanon and include participants from the England Friendship exchange. He is expecting over 70 to be in attendance that day.

Last Wednesday was especially good for Jed Williamson, who not only gave an excellent talk on his work with the Central Asia Institute (CAI) but also drew the his own number for the raffle and then picked the Ace of Spades! Jed's talk began with a recap of the now debunked 60 minutes report on CAI founder Greg Mortensen's alleged misappropriation of donations, an error plagued episode that lento the dismissal of several staffers at the show but nevertheless damaged CAI's reputation. Jed described the efforts of CAI's board to repair the damage done by the flawed report and shared material outlining CAI's recent work (see attached). He responded to questions from club members and encouraged those in attendance to look at the CAI website to get more information on the good work being done in that region.

NEW RAFFLE!!!

A select group within the Club Service Committee, which Rod Thomas chairs, has been considering ways to spice up the weekly raffle process.  Some club members feel that the card drawing has become ho-hum, with winners being few and far between. Therefore, beginning this week, and continuing for an undetermined trial period, there will always be a prize for selecting a card from the wooden rack. That is, every card selector will be a winner. What will they win? Well, here’s where the fun comes in. Some cards will have some real monetary value such as a free or discount Rotary lunch at an upcoming meeting or perhaps a donation to the Rotary Foundation in the winner’s name. The majority of cards (at least for now), however will be gag gifts such as a free cookie at your next Rotary meeting or a guided tour by Rubi Simon of the Howe Library Lower Level. So, the process (raffle tickets, card drawing) will be the same, but the cards and “prizes” will now be different. The Rotarian who has the winning raffle ticket will then choose a card from the rack as usual and then read aloud the “prize” written on the card s/he selects. As this catches on, hopefully club members will want to create their own cards for both types of prizes, monetary and silly. (Editor's note: I will be offering a bound version of previous weekly announcements as a prize. I will let the members decide if this is a valuable prize or a "silly" one).
