LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Dick Podolec introduced Phil Hanlon, Dartmouth College President, who explained how the college has coped with the pandemic and offered an update on Dartmouth College’s progress over the past year. He recalled that a year ago the entire program at the college was upended in a 72-hour period as it moved from a free and open community to one that required students keep a distance from each other, to wear masks, and emphasize health and safety above all else. Dr. Hanlon described how Dartmouth’s teaching and learning was affected by the shift to remote learning… and how the pandemic affected the budget, the application process, and the fundraising and capital projects. In short:
  • the budget was far more austere than usual—requiring across the board wage freezes, some give-backs in salaries, the closure of the Country Club, and other difficult cuts
  • the applicant pool increased by 33%, in large measure because of the sense of applicants that an Ivy League degree is a “sure thing” in the marketplace
  • the capital projects at the engineering school, computer school, the dorms on Mount Support Road, and the green energy conversions are proceeding apace
  • the college has raised $2.75 billion of the 3 billion needed in it capital campaign
  • the design for the renovation of the Hopkins Center has been approved
In response to questions from Club members, Dr. Hanlon reported that the five athletic teams cut earlier in the school year have been reinstated and he expected all athletics to have a full schedule in the Fall. He also reported that there are plans for an arboretum on a portion of the golf course though some development might occur along Route 120. He also noted that the increased applicant pool means that more students will be rejected, and the college faces some daunting decisions because it is unclear whether the yield will be sustained. Thanks to President Hanlon for taking the time to brief our club on Dartmouth's ability to meet the challenges of COVID.
