Good Morning Hanover Rotarians and Friends,
Join us this Wednesday at '53 Commons at Dartmouth( formerly Thayer Hall) in the Paganucci Room for our lunch meeting at 11:45. I am pleased to report that our speaker will be Laura Rice, the Executive Director of CLiF, the Children's Literacy Foundation. Hanover Rotary has been loyal supporters of CLiF and has twice partnered with them for our auction Gala. CLiF does tremendous work throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. Let's give Laura a warm welcome and hear about the important work CLiF has been doing for decades.
From the CLiF website: Early literacy skills are one of the strongest indicators of a child’s future success. Yet more than two-thirds of fourth graders from low-income families in New Hampshire and Vermont do not read proficiently. Many have limited access to inspiring literacy programming and high-quality new books. CLiF’s programs aim to increase children’s enjoyment of reading and writing; provide access to high-quality reading materials that meet the interests of young readers; and give families, schools, libraries, correctional facilities, and other organizations the tools they need to encourage literacy skills.
At our April 9th meeting, our speaker was Dartmouth Professor Russ Muirhead, the Robert Clements Professor of Democracy and Politics and the Chair of the Department of Government at Dartmouth and a member of the New Hampshire house representing the Grafton 12th district. Professor Muirhead ( pictured above with President Bob Haynes) spoke about his experience in the New Hampshire House ( the greatest legislative body in the world I believe was the quote). He talked about the importance of meeting face to face and stating one's position in person, while maintaining cordial relationships with people whose opinions differ from your own.
In case you missed it, on April 15th President Bob invited members of Hanover Rotary to attend a meeting of the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley ( DCUV) at the DOC House. Many Hanover Rotarians attended for an expanded version of the presentation we heard recently by Rod Smolla, President of Vermont Law and Graduate School. Bob was given the floor for a few minutes to give a good overview of what Hanover Rotary and Rotary International are about. It was a great event and a good opportunity to showcase our club in hopes that members of DCUV may consider joining us....and we might consider joining them! Power in numbers.
