LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER:

Wayne Gersen introduced Leona Bergman-Gaul who has launched a chapter of the Vermont Welcome Wagon under the umbrella of Vital Communities. Ms. Bergman-Gaul described how the Welcome Wagon provides newcomers to the Upper Valley with links to up to three “hosts” who will help orient them to the region. Hosts are expected to spend time with those new to the region by inviting them to dinner, to join in a hike or bike trek, a weekly card game, or musical jam session. By spending time with newcomers informally they will feel welcomed to the Upper Valley and gain an understanding of the pros and cons of the area. She hoped that Rotary Club members might consider serving as hosts, noting that signup forms are available online at VTWelcomeWagon.org. Thus far, the Welcome Wagon has served 20 newcomers and identified 40 hosts. In an email exchange following the meeting, I learned that one of us has signed up. Here’s hoping that more will consider it.

LAST WEEK’S ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK:

Tom Csatari, last week’s “Rotarian of the Week”, described his background as a high school footballer where he played with the likes of Joe Theisman. Tom went on to play football at Dartmouth College where the teams seldom lost and he earned All-American status as a defensive end back in the day when they were not 6’5” and 275 pounds. He got a scholarship to attend law school at Vanderbilt after which he accepted his initial assignment working at Dartmouth for 5 years before heading to work with law firms in Oklahoma City and Dallas. He returned to the Upper Valley roughly 20 years ago where the firm he started with evolved into Downs Rachlin Martin. Judy, his wife of 40+ years, retired as a Middle School foreign language teacher and has been very active in the community and church. Tom’s served as Moderator at School District meetings, as a board member on several non-profits, and coached HS football. He has three adult children, one of whom lives in Australia, and

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

David Allen reminded club members that they might consider joining in a community effort to fix up the Old Dartmouth Cemetery on May 6, noting that a free lunch will be provided for those who work the entire day. He announced a Board meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, April 26.

Arthur Gardiner reminded club members that the deadline for ads for the Pancake Breakfast was this Wednesday. He reported that we have $8,400 in commitments to date, far more that the $3,000 +/- we got in 2019 but more is needed! Kevin Wenger and Len Cadwallader encouraged all club members to sign up for the Pancake Breakfast, which will be held on May 7 at Storrs Pond. Kevin sent out a link to register later in the week. Here it is: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0E4AADAB2DA1FF2-pancake

Arthur Gardiner gave a Happy Dollar in anticipation of a correction to the newsletter report that he attended Yale Law School. He went to Harvard.

In the same spirit, Dave Bradley wanted to make it clear that his initial refusal to the Harvard Law School was based on the fact that the admissions office wanted to limit the number of jocks they accepted in any one year.

Kathy Geraghty was the Raffle Winner!
