LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced Michelle Kennedy who shared a wealth of information on the Easter Seals campaign in New Hampshire. Among the tidbits that I learned from the presentation:
  • Easter Seals was started by two Rotarians: Paul Harris and Edgar Allen whose fundraising resulted in the construction of the first hospital for crippled children.
  • Easter Seals was not associated with any religion. Rather, it was named “Easter Seals” because it was intended to provide those who were crippled with the opportunity for resurrection. It was conceived as providing a helping hand as opposed to providing a handout, a conception that is sustained to this day.
  • Easter Seals NH is 85 years old while Easter Seals VT is 40.
  • Easter Seals funds are used to provide a wide array of service for both adults and children. Veterans, foster families, and homeless individuals are all beneficiaries of Easter Seals funds.
  • The funding for Easter Seals comes from the Government, fees for services offered by providers, and grants.
  • One of the primary services Easter Seals provides is case management so that those in need can readily access the services available to them through the federal, statre and local governments and many non-profits.
The 12 Easter Seals sites in NH and 11 sites in VT serve hundreds of individuals and continued providing those services in the face of the challenges presented by the pandemic.
