THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen will introduce Arnon Mishkin of Fox News Surveys who will, Todd assures us, provide a non-partisan analysis of where things stand in terms of the 2020 election. With the passing of RBG added to the mix of volatile campaign issues it will be interesting to see how a professional pollster sees things shaping up in the coming weeks.

AN IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION REGARDING NEXT WEEK: Beginning next week we will be compelled to use Zoom’s “waiting room” feature. This means that as Zoom host I will be serving as gatekeeper for your entry. When you log on you will get a message to that effect. I will do my best to make certain I am available at 11:45 to welcome you… but if I am late, please be patient. THANKS!

LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Todd Allen announced that he received 150 reusable masks to be distributed. He asked Rotarians with ideas on how these might be distributed to email him before the forthcoming Board meeting when the ultimate decision on distribution of these masks would be made.

Todd Allen also wanted members to know that our FaceBook page had been hacked and some odd posts appeared as a result. He assured members that the source had been identified and the problem had been addressed.

And here’s an announcement from Jed Williamson that I left out last week’s bulletin:
Fellow Rotarians, I have signed up Hanover Rotary as a team for the Walk to End Alzheimers that will take place on October 10. Join the team and help me reach the goal I sent: $2,000.

Gert Assmus won the raffle, $10.00 off the price of a meal at Jesse’s when social distancing ends.

DONATIONS IN LIEU OF MEALS

REMINDER: Here’s the link to make your donation in lieu of paying for meals at Jesse’s AND the place to donate your Happy Dollars!  https://hanovernhrotary.ejoinme.org/COVID-19

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced Jon Helminiak, who described the Tunison Foundation’s flights to commemorate the 75thanniversary of D-Day and the 70th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift by retracing their flights. Operating out of Land o’ Lakes Air Base in Wisconsin, the Tunison Foundation restores “old school” military planes and flies them to various venues where they serve as reminders of the sacrifices required to maintain our freedoms.

Jon’s presentation recounted the trip he took in the Placid Lassie--- a two-engine propeller plane-- from Wisconsin to Oxford, CT to Reykjavik, Iceland to Prestwick RAFB in Scotland, to Duxford, UK, and then across the English Channel flying over Normandy Beach before landing in Germany. He described the perils involved in flying for extended periods of time over the open seas and the training required to fly in formation. After the reenactment of the flight over Normandy, he and his colleagues re-enacted the Berlin Airlift, the largest humanitarian airdrop in history.

Jon emphasized the purpose of these reenactments, which is to keep the spirit of the D-Day veterans alive and to make sure that future generations gain an appreciation for the fact that there is a price to be paid for freedom. One point that was driven home with one of his concluding slides was that those who flew these missions were by and large in their 20s, a group we might today deem as far too young to undertake such a challenge!
