THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

The Rotary ZOOM Club Continues! We did OK last week with Zoom and with the Governor and President both agreeing that April is Stay-Indoors Month we’ll have at least five more chances to get this style of meeting down to an art. Two pieces of good news: first, our scheduled speaker Dartmouth’s Randall Ballmer will be our speaker this week talking to us about how the evangelical movement has taken hold of the GOP; and secondly, Liam McCarthy will share our Board’s ideas for how we might help our community in this time of need.

Here’s the way the meeting will play out:

11:45 AM– The Zoom Room opens. When you enter your video will be on but your microphone will be muted. I will be standing by if you need some technical assistance… but by now I hope everyone has become aware of how Zoom works (and sometimes DOESN’T work).

12:00 PM– Liam McCarthy begins the official meeting, at which point we suggest that all mikes be muted and you consider accessing the “speaker view”. It may be helpful to go to gallery view when guests are introduced, birthdays are celebrated, and Happy Dollars are offered.

12:30 PM– Liam introduces our speaker, who will be accepting questions at the conclusion of his talk.

1:00 PM– The meeting ends.

A few ZOOM pointers:
  • As noted above I've set things up so that everyone's mikes will be off when they come in but their videos will be on. That means everyone will be able to see each other but if you are cursing at your computer we won't be able to hear it.
  • Club members can unmute mikes once they enter the meeting if they want to talk to each other, but there is no easy way to engage in individual or small group conversations.
  • The meeting invitation indicates an 11:45 start time but I've set up the Zoom site so that it allows members to log in earlier
  • Once the meeting begins you might consider using the speaker view and to definitely mute your microphone.
  • As this is our second try at this, I confidently predict that something will not work as planned and also trust that you will be patient as we work out kinks. I know that Liam and I are eager for your feedback on how this is working and welcome any advice you can offer.
If you haven’t used ZOOM, here’s a one minute tutorial can stop watching after 26 seconds because as the host for the meeting, I will be waiting to see you when you arrive.

Here’s a video recommendation from Jed Williamson. It's a video made by a respiratory doctor from NYC and is very informative and reassuring. And here's a picture Jed sent along to illustrate how to improvise if you don’t have face mask (AND to make sure you don’t touch your face). My advice: watch or listen to at least the first 25 minutes of the video, get hand sanitizer, and don’t stand too close to Jed if he’s in the checkout line.

Here’s my invitation to the meeting to you. Click on the link or paste it into your url box if Club Runner doesn’t cooperate. Hope to see you in cyberspace on Wednesday!
