AN IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION REGARDING ZOOMAfter posting last week about the forthcoming requirement to use Zoom’s “waiting room” feature, it turns out that MAY have been an overreaction on my part. It MAY be that the link I have sent you will get you right into the meeting… but it’s also possible that as Zoom host I will be serving as gatekeeper for your entry. When you log on, IF you will get a message to that effect please do not panic… I will do my best to make certain I am available at 11:45 to welcome you… but if I am late, please be patient. THANKS!

LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Todd Allen briefed us on the Board meeting as follows:
  • Our club will be joining with the White River Junction Club to recognize the student of the month at Hartford Regional Vocational Technical Center. Details on this partnership will be forthcoming in the near future.
  • Bob Boon shared a fund-raising idea that the Board approved. For $50 per year Rotary Club members will post American Flags at the end of residents driveways for several days leading up to five Holidays: Memorial Day; Flag Day; July 4; Labor Day; and Veterans Day. Clubs who have done this have earned as much as $25,000/year after the initial year when they at the very least break even. The fundraiser DOES require the active participation by club members.
  • The Board voted to give the Hanover Fire Department the 150 masks as a token of appreciation for the work Marty McMillan does in the community.
  • The club has accumulated $7,000 in the as yet undesignated COVID fund (see link below) and the Board will be seeking input from members on how that money could be used.
  • Philip McCaull will be assuming the leadership of the membership committee, taking over for Dick Podolec who will be serving as liaison to the Roteract Club recently launched at Dartmouth.
  • Dick Podolec is seeking mentors to work with Roteract members, and promised to provide some ideas about the kinds of careers the undergraduates were interested in.

Jed Williamson reminded club members that he had signed up Hanover Rotary as a team for the Walk to End Alzheimers that will take place on October 10. Those who want to join the team and help him reach the $2,000 goal he set can use this link to sign up:

Stan Williams won the coveted raffle prize: $10.00 off the price of a meal at Jesse’s when social distancing ends…. And when it DOES end the Club may well be covering the cost of virtually every meal!

DONATIONS IN LIEU OF MEALS

REMINDER: Here’s the link to make your donation in lieu of paying for meals at Jesse’s AND the place to donate your Happy Dollars!  https://hanovernhrotary.ejoinme.org/COVID-19

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen will introduce Arnon Mishkin of Fox News Surveys provided a timely non-partisan analysis of where things stand in terms of the 2020 election. And today’s NYTimes has an article about Arnon, which indicates that his influence in the election will be HUGE:

I cannot do justice to the substance of Arnon’s talk in a paragraph, but the surprising takeawys for me were:
·       None of the President’s criticisms of Biden seem to be “sticking” and that poses a challenge for him as the election nears.
·       Despite the recent developments, the President has higher ratings on the economy than Biden, the ONLY category where he has more favorability.
·       The popular vote is more immaterial than ever. Biden is assured of prevailing in the popular vote by as much as 12,000,000 votes but still may lose.
·       More Democrats intend to mail in their results… and… more problematically, the GOP voters are less confident in election reults that are delayed because of mail ins.
·       Presidential debates have not altered voters thinking… but it’s possible that VP debates DO!

Arnon’s presentation can be accessed on the web here in case you missed it in last week’s email following the meeting:
