LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

David Allen reviewed the board meeting earlier in the week, highlighting upgrades to our web page, the forthcoming work of the International Committee who will be working in Honduras, and the ability to make donations to Rotary Charities directly on our webpage.

Heidi Postupak offered an overview of the work of the Philanthropy Committee in the past and offered an idea going forward given that COVID prevented us from holding our annual fundraisers: we share our expertise with non-profits in the Upper Valley.

David Allen put in an appeal for someone to co-lead the bell-ringing initiative this year, an appeal that we will learn more about this week!

Wayne Gersen offered 20 Happy Dollars in honor of the 20th Anniversary of his re-connection with his now wife (and former HS girlfriend) Gail Kuhl.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced CATV Executive Director Samantha Davidson Green who returned to the Upper Valley a few after completing her degree work and working in Hollywood after graduating from Hanover High. She opened her talk by seeking our questions, which she responded to over the course of her speech. One point she emphasized was the “sacred responsibility” she felt in leading a media organization, which she saw as an “ethically grounded” group designed to connect the community by providing common information and a common forum for civil discourse. She described some the financial challenges CATV faces given the cord-cutting that is going on in individual homes and the cost-cutting that is occurring at the government level where cheaper alternatives to CATV are now available.

Ultimately, CATV rests on one basic pillar: the broadcast of Public Education and Government meetings. Despite the challenges CATV faces, Ms. Green described many innovative ideas for broadening the mission and in doing so, strengthening the community.
