LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced Noel Pauili, a Senior Scientist at Adimab who told us about his firm’s role in developing vaccines and other therapeutic antibody drugs. He explained that Adimab conducts lab experiments to help develop and determine the efficacy of various drugs, figures out how to engineer the drugs so they can be manufactured at scale, and then partners with drug manufacturers who ultimately produce and distribute their “inventions”. He described how and why his firm uses yeast to develop and test the antibodies, noting that yeast makes billions of unique antibodies some of which might push back against a “target of interest”, which is usually some kind of virus that is plaguing humans or animals. He described the need for the antibodies to not only knock the target of interest out for a short term, but to have the ability to remain effective for an extended period of time.

Dr. Pauili predicted that the number of pandemics would be likely to increase in the future because of globalization—which promotes international spread, urbanization—which promotes rapid spread within a country, increased mobility, climate change, and population growth. Because the diseases spread rapidly it is often impossible to develop a virus within the time frame between the onset of a pandemic and its spread. He indicated that several firms across the nation are working to prevent outbreaks but predicting WHICH potential virus will lead to a pandemic is difficult.  In his personal work, he was researching the hanta virus because Adimab saw that as a probable super-spreading virus.
