LAST WEEK’S SPEAKER:

Wayne Gersen introduced Kerry Artman, ED of the Carter Center Building Association (CCBA) in Lebanon, NH. Kerry opened her presentation with a brief history of the CCBA, which opened in 1917 and closed almost immediately to be used as a supplementary armory during  World War I before opening as a community center in 1919. In 1989 the CCBA opened Wetherill Gym, which is the primary facility for physical activities. Kerry reviewed the programs that are offered for patroons from 6 weeks old to 96. She noted that youngsters from 7th grade and up can be members, and that age group clearly benefits from the structured after school activities offered by the CCBA. Kerry noted that during the COVID months the CCBA hosted high school swimming and diving meets, especially during the time period when Vermont residents were not permitted to cross into NH. She noted that CCBA partners with a host of local social service agencies which, when combined with generous donations from local businesses, provides many low income children and adults with opportunities for fitness activities and team sports. She also emphasized the service the CCBA provides to parents of school age children by offering recreation programs when schools are closed. She concluded her talk with a reminder of how CCBA impacts the local economy and expressing gratitude to the many local businesses who make contributions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

David Allen introduced Grace Coughlin a Hanover High junior who won the speech contest for our region. She shared her speech, which included an anecdote about how she boldly called the Nike CEO presentation as part of a project for a class helping students learn about leadership and learned that he believed the key to being a good leader was to find a good mentor. After studying about Rotary’s values, Grace thought that this was something Rotary could do with HHS. She noted that the benefits of mentoring are reciprocal: students could learn from our wisdom and we could learn about TikTok.

David Allen read the list of officers for the second time in advance of their announced anointment on June 1, noting that he is still seeking a Vice President.
