THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

We’ll hear from Joe Clifford about the status of the Lebanon Opera House with a look at future programming… and maybe his thoughts on the efforts to have the Lebanon School District build its own venue for performances.

LAST WEEK'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tom Csatari congratulated Len Cadwallader for receiving the Father Jack Hickey Award for community service at the Hartford Dismas House Dinner on April 14.  Len’s list of contributions to the community are long and varied.  And I was told, though it may be an urban legend, that Len was one of the co-founders of the Rotary Pancake Breakfast! Tom also noted that Dave Allen distributed the sign-up sheets for the School Street Park beautification that will be happening on April 27 beginning at 9:00 AM.

Todd Allen was the raffle winner and he receives a $20 Gift Certificate for Dan and Whit’s where he will most certainly get something he needs!

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Hanover Fire Chief Marty McMillan gave “pinch-hit talk” when we learned that Julia Griffin was fighting a flu bug… and he hit a Grand Slam, sharing his insights on the challenges the Paris Fire Department faced in fighting the blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral. He noted that it is complicated fighting fires where ceilings and roofs are well in excess of 100 feet, which is the limit hoses can reach when they are activated, and even more complicated in historic structures where they lack the sophisticated detection systems that are prevalent in today’s structures. Based on the information he had in hand, he sensed that the fire fighters knew they were facing a daunting challenged and that keeping the roof intact was unlikely.

Marty described the steps Dartmouth College took when they restored Baker Library’s tower, a project analogous to what was happening in Paris. He also used the fire at the Morton dormitory as an example of how it is often necessary to remove a roof in order to save an entire building.

After giving an information overview of the Notre Dame fire, he took questions from Rotarians and, in doing so, contrasted today’s construction with that of 3-4 decades ago, how the fire department approaches a house fire where no detection devices are available, and how fighting fires in rural areas differs from fighting fires in a city.

Thanks, Marty, for a great job filling in on short notice!
