LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Wayne Gersen introduced physician Don Kollish who gave a compelling and detailed presentation making business case for a National Health Program. Don started promoting this idea in the mid-1980s because he witnessed the adverse outcomes that resulted in our country because we lack a national health care program. His slides showed that we compare ourselves to other developed countries we have more health-related bankruptcies, higher infant mortality, higher death rates for mothers, and less medical treatment even though we are spending more of our GDP for health. His slides illustrated the reasons for this, which deal with higher administrative costs, the need for health insurance companies to make a profit, and higher pharmaceutical costs.

Dr. Kollish then illustrated that Medicare is the most efficient provider of medical services in our country, showing that health care for those over 65 is the best in the world! His conclusion: if we hope to make health care better in this country, we need more primary care doctors, universal coverage, and no private health insurers. He concluded his talk with an overview of HR 676, which advocates “Medicare for All” as the best way forward.
