LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Wayne Gersen introduced Kaitie Eddington the program manager of the Upper Valley Trails Alliance (UVTA) whose talk touched on the mission and history of her organization, its programs and projects, its scope, and its educational component.

UVTA’s four staff members assist in the development and maintenance of trails in 43 towns in our region. Founded by Vital Communities in 1999, UVTA coordinates trail building, develops and/or validates trail maps, and sponsors various events designed to promote outdoor activities. It typically develops or recovers 70 miles of trails per year, trails like those on the Gile tract, the Trescott Lands, and other community developed trails throughout the region. It’s education programs include a Passport to Winter Fun for K-6 children and trail building “camps” for high schoolers. Over the years, UVTA has provided outdoor activities for 45,000 children in 48 schools and built roughly 50 miles of trails per year!

In response to questions from Rotarians, Katie reported that 2020 was their best year in terms of participation on the trails… but fund raising was down because the various fund raising activities were cancelled due to COVID. UVTA works closely with organizations like the Green Mountain Club and Hanover Conservancy, seeing them as partners as opposed to competition. UVTA’s goals are to expand its trail network and become the go-to source of trail information.
