LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Last week’s programs had three parts.

First, Heidi Postupak explained the Philanthropy Committee’s process for reviewing grants, noting that last year the Committee started with 50 submissions which they winnowed to 23 non-profits who received $44,000 in total. She indicated the committee would review the process for awarding grants in January before presenting their final recommendation to board in early 2019. Heidi also invited other Rotary members to join her committee.

Second, our new Head Elf Mike Urzenis explained the procedures for retrieving and returning the belland sap bucket we use to seek Listen contributions and reminded the members that the club is matching the donations the public is making… a fact that should be widely broadcast when we are ringing the bell. Hats off to Mike for his outstanding job of taking over as Head Elf! Julia set a very high bar for this task and Mike has measured up and then some! Kudos for a job well done!

Last but not least, we heard Allison Sherman’s new member talk. We learned that Allison went from HS to college to law school to the DRM and given that trajectory, she was afraid her talk might be boring. She was very wrong! After briefly describing her academic career, Allison regaled us with stories of her many and varied part-time jobs which included work at Smugglers Notch where she began folding towels but ended up working in the tennis shop where she learned the best grips for a racket… and how to play the ukulele and juggle. She described the 4 jobs she worked at Middleburg College, including work on the campus cab service and sportswriting for the Burlington Free Press where she covered box lacrosse. After two years at Middlebury she transferred Grove City before attending law school in Boston where her part-time work consisted of caring for aunt and editing book on gay marriage. As always, the new member talks are worth hearing!
