THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

When we learned in a 24-hour period that our originally scheduled speaker was unavailable, three back-up speakers we’re unavailable on short notice, AND we would return to Zoom ONLY, Todd Allen came to our rescue lining up Arnon Mishkin on short notice. Those who heard Arnon’s reports on the political landscape at previous meetings will be certain to join us at noon for what will be an entertaining and informative talk.

LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bruce Atwood announced that the date for Stuff-a-Truck was September 18 and promised to offer details on how, where, and when to deliver items for this event in the weeks ahead. The broad standard is "useful stuff not junk".

David Allen announced that Nan Carroll will be hosting a Lobster Roll feast at her home in Norwich on September 8. This event will take the place of our meeting on that date.

David Allen circulated two sign-up sheets: one for volunteers to help at Nan’s event and another to enlist individuals who want to help re-launch the auction.

Greg Bazylewicz offered five Happy Dollars to Nan Carroll who helped him downsize from his home in Norwich to a smaller one in Hanover.

Bob Ashton offered two Happy Dollars: one for his son’s performance in a Midsummer Night’s Dream at Northern Stage and one for the successful sale of a company he managed.

Todd Allen offered a Happy Dollar for a podcast he did for Mountain Times

Kathy Geraghty gave a Happy Dollar in appreciation of a set of pictures she received from Jeremy Lambeth who is doing well at Oklahoma State.

AND... Kathy Geraghty won the raffle which entitles her a ten-dollar-off coupon for a future lunch at Jesse’s… which we HOPE will be redeemed soon!

FLASH!!! THIS JUST IN FROM THE RAFFLE MANAGEMENT TEAM:

The hibernating RAFFLE MANAGEMENT TEAM (RMT) contacted me and asked that I inform the club that the weekly raffle is suspended until we can again meet in person. In its statement, the RMT stated that it fully understands the disappointment this action will bring to the fervent fans of the raffle and promises that it will make a glorious return in (it hopes) the near future.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced Matt Garcia, Dartmouth college professor on Latin American studies who has a deep interest in food sourcing given his families roots in that arena: his mother working for 63 years in food services at Claremont College and his father operating a butcher store in California.

Matt used the example of the expansion of Thai cuisine since the 1980s to illustrate how government policy has a strong impact on our diets. He noted that before NAFTA, it was costly to provide authentic Thai cuisine since many of the plants and spices that serve as the basis for that cooking were unavailable in North America. Once the trade increased between Mexico and the US and Thai restaurant owners found that those spices and plants could be grown in Mexico, enterprising Mexican farmers began growing things like lemongrass and kafir leaves and that, combined with the American’s desire for the tantalizing Thai foods, resulted in a boom in Thai cuisine that extended into places like--- well--- Hanover!

Matt also described how government policy on immigration is having an adverse effect on farming in the US given the farmers reliance on undocumented workers to plant, manage, and pick crops. The challenge for government policy makers across the globe but especially in the US is finding a way to keep food affordable without exploiting laborers
