The Raffle Management Team (RMT) awarded a $10 in-kind donation to Willing Hands to Bruce Atwood who successfully identified the fourth part of the 4 way test as being beneficial for all concerned as opposed to being beneficial to the individual themselves--- the fourth precept of the Ayn Rand Rotary Club.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Todd Allen introduced Adair Mulligan, Executive Director of the Hanover Conservancy who gave a presentation on the progress of the organization, New Hampshire’s oldest local land trust. She noted that the Conservancy began nearly 60 years ago with the acquisition of Balch Hill and as a private, non-profit protects the lands and waters of Hanover. The Conservancy how has 543 members representing ¼ of the Households in Hanover!

Adair reviewed the key elements of the recently adopted 5 year plan for the Conservancy, which focuses on climate change. The plan will ensure there are as many unfragmented forest lands as possible while maintaining the trails that the community values. She briefed the club on the acquisition of Mink Brook Forest, noting that it would be opening to the public in the near future and reviewed the many ways the Conservancy serves the community through education programs in schools, in Osher, and through various outreach activities highlighted in their monthly newsletter. She invited club members to learn about opportunities by logging onto the website at www.hanoverconservancy.org

In response to various questions Adair noted the roughly 23% of Hanover’s land is currently conserved; that the Town will be taking the lead in trail development in the Mink Brook Forest; that Japanese knotweed, a pervasive invasive, will be killed with chemicals as a last resort; and, that the widening of Greensboro Road, a dream of all who live in Etna and ride bikes into town, will probably not happen in our lifetimes because of complications involving who owns and controls it-- the State or the Town. She indicated to Len Cadwallader that she hoped the Quabbin-to-Cardigan initiative might help other communities replicate the kind of community support Hanover receives from its residents.
