LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

David Allen announced ex post facto that he celebrated his birthday at Todd Allen’s social and was sung to by those in attendance.

Ginia Allison announced that her daughter, Perry, who has been a frequent presenter at our club, was recovering from surgery for the removal of a growth on her brain.

Todd Allen reminded club members that he had emailed the link to Arnon Mishkin’s recent talk and that going forward all speakers will be recorded and their presentations shared with CATV. He also asked club members to respond to Dick Podolec’s email seeking mentors for Roteract members. He also announced that our club would be joining with others in the Upper Valley to offer recognition to HATC students through a monthly award.

Dave Bradley offered a Happy Dollar in honor of the walk he and his wife Ann took along Mink Brook as part of the Alzheimer’s fund raiser Jed Williamson promoted.

Jim Bonney also offered a Happy Dollar in honor of Jed Williamson’s effort to raise funds for Alzheimer’s.

The panel of experts overseeing the awarding of the raffle determined that John Hochreiter was the winner… meaning he will get a $10.00 discount once we return to Jesse’s for lunch.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Rory Gawler spoke on the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC), the largest in the United States. Unlike many clubs sponsored by college and universities, the DOC is entirely student led, which, Rory believes, is why it is so large and how it is able to provide 22 different offerings. He described the internal workings of the club, describing how his role as DOC’s administrator is to work with the 22 students who coordinate the offerings as well as the four students who oversee the major activities of the DOC: the first year program, the management of trails, the oversight of the retreat center at Moosilauke, and overall leadership of the club. He noted that these four leadership positions are analogous to heading up non-profits and the leadership opportunities offered in the other 22 areas are invaluable as well.

One major focus of Rory Gawler’s talk was the DOC’s efforts to expand the club’s diversity, inclusivity, equity, and social justice components. He viewed these as “work we do” as opposed to “problems we solve”. He saw the need for the DOC to offer training in anti-racism the same way it offers training in first aid and asserted that even though some DOC members feel that they’ve done enough, there is still more to be done in this area. He indicated that the club is now gathering systematic data on participation rates and hoped to use that data to inform future decisions and assist with recruitment of non-participants in the future.

Coming Attractions:

October 28 – Todd Allen introduces George Abetti who will talk about Geo-Barns.

November 4 – Todd Allen will introduce two guest speakers, Meegan Daigler and Ari Sopher whose topic is Rela-treating pelvic organ prolapse. There is a possibility some members may want to log on early that day for a post-mortem of the election… assuming the results are in.

November 11 – Todd Allen will introduce Beth Wallace, who will talk about mentoring in a pandemic.

November 18 – President Todd Allen will introduce Peter Mitchell who will talk to us about employee engagement surveys.

Thanks to Todd Allen we are booked through Christmas with the exception of November 25… and Dick Podolec has some great speakers set for late January!

Do YOU have any ideas for speakers to fill in the blanks moving forward? We’d love to hear them! We’re looking for speakers in early January 2021 and from February 2021 forward.
