This week, Jed Williamson will brief us on the latest work by the Central Asia Institute, an organization he has served for several years. For those who aren't familiar with Central Asia Institute (CAI), their mission is to increase access to education in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan – countries where education is most desperately needed. They especially focus on girls, because "girls and women with education are more likely to share this knowledge with their children, families, and communities." And unfortunately, women and girls often face daunting challenges in their efforts to accessing education as compared to their male counterparts. Jed's presentations on the CAI are always thought provoking and informative.

Last week Dick Podolec gave a brief introduction to the Friendship Exchange taking place from Tues. Oct. 16 through Sat. Oct. 20th . He is in need of volunteer drivers. Please see the attachment for further information.

The club is looking for someone to “chime in" by offering to serve as our Bell Ringing Captain. Julia Griffin has done heroic duty for years and now we need someone to take over. Please contact President Tom if you are interested. Remember our motto: Service Above Self !

Rubi Simon is looking for host families for our exchange student. Hosts commit to a three month hosting: December through February or March through May. Please contact Rubi for further information for yourself or if you know of a non-Rotarian family who might be interested.

Rotarian Jeremy Lambeth offered a happy dollar to announce that he and his wife are expecting a daughter in February. Congratulations!

Our speaker last week was Sandra Johnson of the Hanover Garden Club gave a very informative talk about the history, goals and activities of the club, which was founded in 1936 and has “blossomed” ever since. She shared not only facts and figures, but also offered touching human interest stories, noting that a certain Julius Mason had a profound impact on our community.

Sandra reported that the club maintains 12 gardens in town and 26 hanging baskets. They provide the public with gardening information, sponsor a yearly plant sale, post Christmas Wreaths around town, offer weekly flower donations at the hospital, and beautify our town in many other ways. Another example of people working hard to impact and improve the quality of life for us all.

Currently the club is working towards the purchase and relocation of a new greenhouse. They have out grown the current facility and also need to relocate due to the expansion of town operations in the current venue. Fundraising and grant proposals are in the works.

Dick Podolec noted that the Garden Club is offering two programs on Monday, September 17th (that's tonight!) at the Black Senior Center, 7 p.m. The Black Center is 48 Lebanon Street with parking in front, behind, and at the Hanover High School.

The first talk is “The Beautification of Hanover—How it Began with One Person” by Sandra Johnson. The second talk is “Some Upcoming Developments in Hanover’s Further Beautification” by Larry Litten. He will present plans for the next beautification project in Hanover—the School Street Sustainability Park.

Looking ahead, we have Dartmouth economist Danny Blanchflower as our speaker next week. He will offer his take on the world today through his perceptive-- and often humorous-- economic lens. His talks are always well attended and VERY entertaining.

On October 3 John Currier, the Co-Founder Mobile Virtual Player will be our speaker... and... because our schedule for the weeks beyond October 3 is full of uncertainty, I am holding off on publication for the time being. BUT, if you want the most timely information on Hanover Rotary happenings I recommend logging onto our Facebook page! Jeremy Lambeth does an excellent job of posting the most up-to-the-minute information there, including 11th hour changes to speakers and events!

Hope you can make it on Wednesday!
