AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE COVID PROTOCOLS AT JESSES

Rod Thomas passes along the following information on Jesse’s guidelines:
  • Club members should wear a mask when entering Jesse’s and when not eating
  • After making your meal selection, and getting your name tag, the highly trained team of Greeters will shepherd club members to their seats.
  • Since state guidelines still prohibit any buffet style service, Jesse’s staff will be serving us the salads, soup, etc. at our tables as we arrive.
  • The staff assured us that cookies will be available
  • The dining area at Jesse’s will open at 11:45, the welcoming bell will sound at noon, after which we can eat and socialize. Announcements will begin at roughly 12:30 with the guest speaker introduced at roughly 12:45. The meeting will conclude at 1:15 PM.
  • The $18 lunch will include three meal options (fish, red meat, vegetarian) and the soup, salad, dessert, and drink bar will be available.
  • We WILL continue ZOOMING the meetings, with the “broadcast” beginning at 12:30.
THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Len Cadwallader will introduce Mike Harris, an ACTS Honduras Board member and the former superintendent in Lebanon and Lyme, who will give us an update on their work. After two tropical storms in 2020, relentless poverty, and corrupt governance Honduras experiences some of the worst economic conditions in the world.

LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

FIRST AND FOREMOST, Todd Allen reminded club members that we will be returning to live meetings at Jesse’s this week. He hoped to see everyone who responded affirmatively to the survey question to make it and indicated 25-30 members were likely to be in attendance. He also reminded club members of the format for the live meetings, which is described above.

Todd Allen reminded club members that their dues were due by the end of June.

Tom Csatari encouraged members to contribute to the Rotary Foundation, noting we are below 50% in our participation rate. Contributions can be made on the Rotary webpage or checks can be sent along with dues, to PO Box 381,Hanover NH, 03755.

David Allen offered a Happy Dollar to celebrate his son’s arrival from the West Coast.

The Raffle Management Team offered ten dollars in the name of Carolyn Watson but disappointed many club members with his announcement that upon return to Jesse’s the qualifying questions for the Raffle will be eliminated since we will be returning to the drawing of tickets to identify the winner.

DONATIONS IN LIEU OF MEALS

REMINDER: Here’s the link to make your donation in lieu of paying for meals at Jesse’s AND the place to donate your Happy Dollars! As Todd announced at the meeting last week, the funds will be earmarked for Willing Hands. You can click her to contribute: https://hanovernhrotary.ejoinme.org/COVID-19. We now have $4,000 in donations but Todd is hoping we can get an additional $1,000 by the end of June when a new beneficiary will be announced.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

David Allen introduced Miriam Conrad, head of the New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island federal public defenders office. Ms. Conrad described the kinds of cases she defends: drug sales; gun violence; immigrant violations; and fraud. To help club members get a handle on the kinds of issues she faces, Ms. Conrad gave us a case study of someone she defended and asked us to recommend a sentence. Our club determined that the case she described warranted 2-3 years and she indicated that the sentences could range from release for time served in the condition that the individual attend counselling sessions to 18 years!

Ms. Conrad gave an overview of the US criminal justice system and the prisons noting that our nation has the highest incarceration rates among developed countries and a high percentage of minorities imprisoned. With black males 5 times more likely to be jailed than their white counterparts. She also offered a host of statistics on the prevalence of mentally ill and addicted individuals who are incarcerated. Finally, Ms. Conrad underscored the impact of mandatory sentencing on the length of sentences, a major cost driver in the $81,0000,000,000/year spent to operate our prisons at all levels of the government.
