LAST WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

FIRST AND FOREMOST, Todd Allen reminded club members that we will be returning to live meetings at Jesse’s in June. As noted above, we are trying to determine the efficacy of doing a Zoom. simulcast. If you skipped the survey link before, click on it now:

Todd Allen shared the following from Nick Harvey’s “retirement letter”: "I am very impressed and pleased with the development of the club in the last decade or so. It has many devoted members and is a great contributor to our community and to our local nonprofit organizations. We now raise very substantial funds due to the hard work and creative initiative of many members. We are now actively involved with students both in the high school and college and also internationally through student and adult exchanges – all of which activities are impressive.

I would simply like to encourage more Rotarians to participate in the Rotary Foundation.  I believe our contributions are very well spent and in a way that helps our divided nation and world better understand and relate to one another."

Todd Allen also announced that Deb Blanc qualified as a Paul Harris Fellow based on her donations to Rotary Foundation.

Dick Podolec announced an event sponsored by the Dartmouth Roterac on May 15 featuring four speakers on their service experiences. Dave Allen promised to forward details on the event, which he did later in the week.

Finally, Todd Allen reminded club members that their dues invoices were sent recently and payments were expected before the end of June.

Bruce Atwood contributed a Happy Dollar in honor of his successful descent of Mt. Lafayette on a “sore ankle” that turned out to be broken!

The Raffle Management Team offered ten dollars each in the name of Bruce Atwood and Casey Aldrich for successfully identifying the purpose of Hanover Rotary artifacts that were used in by club members before they joined: a lunch ticket; the deck of cards used to (all too rarely) give raffle awards; and an old school Rotary cap from the Reign of Nan Carroll.

DONATIONS IN LIEU OF MEALS

REMINDER: Here’s the link to make your donation in lieu of paying for meals at Jesse’s AND the place to donate your Happy Dollars! As Todd announced at the meeting last week, the funds will be earmarked for Willing Hands. https://hanovernhrotary.ejoinme.org/COVID-19.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Jed Williamson introduced Dan Richards of Global Rescue who gave us a history of his organization, it’s mission, and several examples of the kinds of rescues undertaken in years past. Founded in 2004, Global Rescue currently employs 250 professionals who provide support services to over 1,000,000 “members”. Global Rescue also partners with 200+ medical entities who help provide medical support to the “members” when they are in need and ING insurers who help underwrite plans for the members. Dan shared five examples of the kinds of services Global Rescue provides: a rescue in the wilderness of Colea Canyon Peru that required a helicopter lift; a rescue in Nepal where one of the hiker/explorers perished; an amazing rescue in the Himalyas of a scientist who fell into a glacial crevasse; support and assistance during the 2010 earthquake in Haiti; and medical and logistical support for a guiding service that offer a chance for its customers to view a solar eclipse in Mongolia.

In the Q and A session Dan described the post covid hazards and risks, underscoring the need for Americans to travel as much as possible in undeveloped nations whose major source of revenues come from tourism. He also expressed concerns that the privations that emerged as a result of the pandemic have given “bad actors” the need to exert their influence.

We heard from “new” member Charlie McCrudden who’s been a Rotarian for over 60 years!. He described his work experiences in the Youngstown, Ohio area where he founded, managed, and ultimately sold an HVAC business and his decision to move to a place closer to his children and where he has fond memories of vacations taken in the 1950s.
