THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Jeremy Lambeth will introduce Jay Satterfield, Rauner Library’s Head of Special Collections who will share the history of Dartmouth’s decision to hire Elizabeth Hapgood, the college’s first female professor. The title of his talk, “Camouflaging Mrs. Hapgood” intimates that the hire involved some subterfuge.

LAST WEEK'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

A HOLIDAY REMINDER! Mike Urnezis desperately needs our help!!! Here’s the link to sign-up for bell-ringing: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0944a5ac2fa4fa7-bell

And… last week, Kevin Wenger reminded everyone that a website has been set up to take donations online for those who don't want to venture out in the cold and stick a donation in the bell ringers' pot.

Jeremy Lambeth urged everyone to attend this week's Rotary meeting. The speaker is "highly entertaining" and, as noted above, the subject will be Dartmouth's first female professor -- a story that is funny, sad and "a little tragic".

Todd Allen, acting president, reminded everyone there will be no meetings December 25 and January 1.

Teri Minelli made a $5 Happy Dollar donation, celebrating that her daughter, Kelly, was married in Cleveland last Thursday.

Nan Carrollmade a Happy Dollar donation, announcing that Caldwell Banker is again doing their "Angel Tree". Local social agencies have provided the age and gender of low income children in the area who may not get Christmas presents unless an angel appears. There are 14 children left for whom no angel has yet been found. Stop by Caldwell Banker if you'd like to be an angel, pick out a child based on age and gender, find out what they're hoping to get and go shopping -- or make a cash donation and someone will shop for you! Unwrapped gifts should be delivered by next Monday.

Jeremy Lambeth made a $1 happy dollar contribution in celebration of their daughter walking for this first time yesterday.

White River Rotary is looking for volunteers to help with the Polar Express this Saturday and Sunday.

Jim Bonney told our table that the charity started by his wife, Leelee, and which has been supported by the Rotary in the past, provides support to families in the mountain villages of Nepal. Tax deductible donations may be made to The Tara Foundation, P.O. Box 379, Meriden NH 03770.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Last week two new Hanover Rotarians gave their classification talks.

Stephen Brynn moved to the Hanover area a couple of years ago. He is originally from Shelburne VT and grew up spending summers on Lake Champlain, winters skiing and enjoying golf and biking. He graduated from Rice High School, a private Catholic school in 1988 and attended Assumption College in Worcester. His first job was at Bad Habits Bar and Grill in Washington DC until a girlfriend convinced him to move back to Boston. There he managed car dealerships for over 20 years until a friend convinced him to buy a restaurant in Stowe Vermont. That left him stressed and in debt, but happily married to a former waitress. When he left the restaurant business, he moved to Keene NH where he managed a retail store until the impossible hours and an opportunity with Liberty Mutual opened up. Now, he works for Liberty Mutual with offices in various towns throughout NH and VT as well as his mobile car office.

Bruce Atwood moved to Hanover because it is one of the few places where he can do all five of the things he likes best to do: hike, bike, run, cross-country ski and kayak. He has no connection to Dartmouth but enjoys attending their concerts and lectures. He has been a Rotarian since 1985 and is past president of the Rockford IL Rotary club. He retired after 20 years teaching mathematics at Beloit College. He also served for four years as a park commissioner in Rockford. Previous to teaching math, he was a research engineer at Western Electric. He did his undergraduate work at Stanford, did graduate work in engineering and mathematics at Princeton and Northern Illinois Universities and received an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School.
